SATURDAY QUICK HITS
The Phillies had a month to remember as they set a club record for wins in the month of April. They went an impressive 18-8 and finished off the month with a 2-1 win over the New York Mets.
Roy Halladay was on the mound for the Phillies and the 136th consecutive home sellout crowd saw Halladay pitch his 60th complete game allowing one run on seven hits. Halladay started the afternoon by throwing 18 straight strikes becoming the first pitcher to do so since Sid Fernandez in 1991. Roy struck
out eight and walked one. His pitch count was 107, of that number 80 were strikes.
Placido Polanco went two for three with one RBI and raised his average to .398. John Mayberry had the other RBI with his first home run of the season.
The Mets starting pitcher Jonathon Niese lost for the fourth time, he has one win this year. Niese pitched well giving up two runs on six hits walking two and striking out three. Carlos Beltran was two for four and had the lone RBI for the Mets. With their third loss in a row the New York Mets are now 11-16.
The hitting streak we are watching is still alive as Andre Ethier delivered two singles in a 5-2 Dodger loss to the Padres. Ethier’s two hits gave him 40 for the month of April tying the club record shared by Mike Piazza (1996) and Rafael Furcal (2008). Ethier also had a hit on March 31 in the Dodgers season opener.
Andre Ethier has now hit safely in 26 games a record for April. He has the longest hitting streak for a Dodger since Willie Davis who holds the franchise record of 31 games in 1969.
Hiroki Kuroda started for the Dodgers, pitched seven innings giving up two runs on just five hits with seven strikeouts. Matt Guerrier (2-2) gets the loss allowing three runs, two earned on three hits and two walks in one inning.
The Padres record is now 10-17 after the win. They scored three runs in the eighth inning the most since a four run eighth against Houston on April 17th. Cameron Maybin went two for four with one RBI.
Heath Bell recorded his sixth save for the Padres, Luke Gregerson(1-1) gets the win.
