MONDAY QUICK HITS
Oakland beat the Texas Rangers today 5-4 in ten innings. The A’s end up taking three of four in the series. The Rangers have now lost six of their last eight games.
Hideki Matsui ended the game by hitting the first pitch in the tenth inning into the right field seats for his third home run and the walk-off win. Josh Willingham (5) and Kurt Suzuki (3) also homered for the Athletics.
Grant Balfour (2-1) gets the win pitching one inning walking three and striking out two.
The Texas Rangers starting pitcher Derek Holland pitched seven innings allowing three runs on eight hits. Darren Oliver (1-3) threw one pitch in the tenth, gave up the home run and gets his third loss of the year.
Julio Borbon was two for two with two runs scored. Michael Young went one for three with three RBI for the Rangers.
Oakland is now a game over .500 at 15-14 and the Texas Rangers go to 16-13.
The New York Yankees picked up another win to improve their record to 17-9. They scored two runs in the ninth to defeat the Tigers 5-3.
Bartolo Colon started the game for New York, pitched seven innings and gave up three runs on seven hits. Joba Chamberlain (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win and Mariano Rivera a perfect ninth for his 11th save.
Jorge Posada went two for five with two RBI and Nick Swisher was two for four with a one RBI single in the ninth to break the tie.
Justin Verlander started for Detroit and pitched six innings giving up three runs on eight hits. Jose Valverde (2-1) takes the loss. Alex Avila had two home runs for Detroit he was two for four with two RBI.
