SATURDAY QUICK HITS

DETROIT TIGERS @ TORONTO BLUE JAYS

A no-hitter in Toronto for Detroit’s Justin Verlander as Detroit beat the Blue Jays 9-0. This was Verlander’s second career no-hitter and  all so close for a perfect game. The only batter to reach base was J.P. Arencibia who walked in the eighth inning. Verlander struck out  four on the way to his no-hitter. His total pitch count for the game was 108, 74 for strikes. This was the first no-hitter for Detroit since Jack Morris threw one in 1984 against the Chicago White Sox. Verlander goes to 3-3 this season with the win.
The offense gave Verlander plenty of support scoring nine runs on eleven hits. Jhonny Peralta (2) and Alex Avila (6) homered for Detroit. Peralta was two for five with two RBI.
The Tigers go to 16-18 and Toronto is now 15-18 this season.

ATLANTA BRAVES @ PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

Saturday night in Philadelphia and a solid win for the Phillies. Roy Oswalt was scheduled to pitch but went on the disabled list on Friday  with lower back inflammation. Kyle Kendrick who has been pitching out of the bullpen this year got the start. A former starter, Kyle did not skip a beat and pitched five strong innings allowing no runs, two hits, walked one and struck out three. The Phillies bullpen kept the shutout in order for Kendrick (2-2) in the 3-0 win.
Ryan Howard hit another home run, his 260th and is now in second place on Philly’s career home run list. Howard passed Del Ennis and is second to Mike Schmidt who has 548. Howard has seven home runs this season. Ryan went one for four with one RBI, his 30th this year.
Twenty year old Julio Teheran (0-1) made his major league debut for the Braves. Teheran lasted 4 2/3 innings and gave up all three runs on four hits.
The Phillies win gives them a 22-10 record and Atlanta is now 19-16.
