PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES @ ATLANTA BRAVES
Cole Hamels started for the Phillies and five relievers came into
the game to finish for Cole and get the Phillies a 5-4 win. Hamels went six innings, struck out seven, walked one and gave up four runs on eight hits. J.C. Romero, Michael Stutes, Antonio Bastardo, Vance Worley and Ryan Madson combined, gave up two hits in the final three innings. Ryan Madson got his sixth save and the win went to Antonio Bastardo (2-0).
Ryan Howard had a first inning home run with two on. This was Howard’s ninth of the year and with three RBI now has 35 for the season. Raul Ibanez and Shane Victorino also drove in a run each for the Phillies.
Brandon Beachy got the start for the Braves and went two innings giving up three runs on six hits. Beachy said he hurt himself when he struck out swinging in the bottom of the second and was pulled during his warm up pitches in the top of the third inning. Braves reliever Cristhian Martinez came in and retired all twelve batters he faced. He also had his first hit of his career, a double that also gave him his first RBI’s, as he drove in two. Eric O’Flaherty (1-2) gets the loss for the Braves.
The Phillies maintain the best record in the majors at 25-12. Atlanta is now 21-19 this season.
BOSTON RED SOX @ NEW YORK YANKEES
Boston scored three runs in the seventh and held off the Yankees for a 5-4 win. Adrian Gonzalez (8) and Kevin Youkilis (6) homered for Boston and both picked up two RBI each. Gonzalez has 31 RBI and Youkilis 22 so far this year.
Clay Buchholz (4-3) started for Boston and gets the win. Clay pitched seven strong innings giving up two runs on five hits, striking out seven with one walk. Jonathan Papelbon recorded his sixth save for Boston.
The Yankees starter Bartolo Colon (2-2) pitched six innings giving up three runs on five hits with three walk and four strikeouts. Russell Martin hit his seventh home run for New York.
Boston is now 18-20 and New York is 20-16. The Yankees are two games behind the Rays and Boston is still five behind Tampa Bay.
