THURSDAY QUICK HITS
CINCINNATI REDS @ PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
After Wednesday’s marathon that lasted nineteen innings the Phillies and Reds met this afternoon for game four of their series with the Phillies owning a two game to one advantage. The time for game three was six hours and eleven minutes, lasting nineteen innings, with 600 total pitches. It ended at 1:19 AM Thursday. The Phillies won the game with the help of Wilson Valdez. Valdez was the first player since 1921 to start a game
in the field and later win the game as a pitcher. You may recognize the name of that player in 1921, Babe Ruth. The great thing about baseball, if you never saw it before, the possibility of it happening before, does exist. Even if it was ninety or a hundred years ago!
So on to today’s game. Cliff Lee got the start for the Phillies and
delivered from the mound and with his bat. Lee was two for four with three RBI, not too shabby for a pitcher. On the mound Lee went eight innings allowing four runs on ten hits with one walk and eight K’s. With the 10-4 win Lee goes to 4-4 for the season. Jose Contreras back from the DL list pitched a perfect ninth striking out one.
Chase Utley nailed his first home run and Raul Ibanez his sixth of the season for the Phillies. Every player who had an ‘at bat’ had a hit today for the Phillies.
The Phillies take three of four from the Reds and after fifty games are now 31-19.
Homer Bailey started for the Reds and went four innings giving up four runs on five hits. Daryl Thompson (0-1) gets the loss giving up five runs on six hits and walking five.
The Reds are 26-25 so far this year.
