PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES @ WASHINGTON NATIONALS

     Game three of the series was a good one but if you are a Phillies fan like myself, this was one that hurt and left you feeling sort of empty. The Nationals win the series two games to one and the final score of 2-1 today makes you  wonder once again where the Phillies offense might be. The Phillies scored two runs in game two and one in the final game of the series today. Just will not get the wins even with strong pitching.

     Roy Oswalt (3-3) got the start and loss for the Phillies. Not a bad game, as he allowed just two runs on six hits, walking two with three K’s in five innings. Michael Stutes pitched a perfect sixth and seventh and Antonio Bastardo pitched the eighth giving up only a walk. Not good enough, as the Phillies offense was flat.

 

     The Phillies could only produce one run on five hits. Ryan Howard was the only player with two hits in today’s game. Domonic Brown pinch-hit for the Phillies with two out and the bases loaded and Laynce Nix made a great diving catch to save at least two runs and end the inning.

     John Lannan got the start for the Nationals and beat the Phillies for the first time in fourteen tries. Lannan (3-5) went 5.1 innings giving up one unearned run on four hits, walking three, with one strikeout. The Nationals relievers took care of the rest of the game allowing one hit and one walk. Drew Storen recorded his tenth save of the season.
    

     Laynce Nix hit his ninth home run of the year and it was huge as the Nationals were held to six hits and two runs, enough for the win. Roger Bernadina was the only National with two hits today. Jason Werth had a RBI along with Nix with his solo shot off of Oswalt.

     The Phillies get a much needed day off on Thursday and with the loss today have a record of 34-22. Washington goes to 24-31 with their second win in a row.
