TUESDAY QUICK HITS
BOSTON RED SOX @ PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
LEE ON A ROLL!
Cliff Lee did it again and pitched his third straight shutout, to defeat Josh Beckett and the Red Sox 5-0. This was the first game of the series and the Phillies came on strong with Lee on the mound and Domonic Brown and Shane Victorino at the plate.
Cliff is now 9-5 with tonights win. Cliff went the nine, allowing just two hits with two walks and five K’s. In five starts this month Lee is 5-0 with a ERA of 0.21. Lee also is on a streak of 32 scoreless innings.
Brown and Victorino both had two-run homers to help in the win. Brown was two for three with two RBI and two runs scored. Victorino was one for four with two runs scored and two RBI.
Josh Beckett (6-3) went six innings allowing five runs on five hits and gets his third loss of the year.
PHILLIES FIRST TO FIFTY WINS!
The Phillies celebrated their 50th win today and now have a record of 50-30. In the 2010 season Philadelphia accomplished that fête on July 23rd. A little ahead of schedule this year to say the least. It is also important to note their loss record of 30. During the 2010 season this number was reached way back on June 15. Ahead of last years pace to date and the only thing I’m looking at now is their finish in 2010.
In the second half of 2010 they had a fantastic record of 50-25 with an eleven game win streak in September to get them into the playoffs. They were tied for first on September 11th and with their first win of the eleven game streak were one game up. When the smoke cleared at the end of the day, with their eleventh win, they were seven games up and and post season play not far off. That was September 24th 2010.
This year they have been ahead of the pack all season with the lone exception being April 26th when they were a half game out. They currently have a five game lead.
Things can turn and they can change fast. Even with this great record the Phillies have actually struggled with their hitting so far this season. Things seem to be changing a little on that front lately. The pitching is what seems to be the glue for the Phillies and although they have had a few glitches here and there they have been strong. Now with Roy Oswalt out until sometime in August and Ryan Madson on the DL they are making changes to their pitching staff and will be counting on Hamels, Lee, and Halladay as they have all season.
