TUESDAY QUICK HITS
PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES @ FLORIDA MARLINS
Game two between the Phillies and Marlins saw Cole Hamels on the mound for the Phillies and Chris Volstad for the Marlins at home. The Phillies would have to take the field without starters Placido Polanco and Shane Victorino.
Without them in the line-up the offense would need to step it up, and they did so quickly in the third inning. They scored five runs, with Raul Ibanez getting two RBI with a single, Domonic Brown a RBI with a single and Wilson Valdez, Placido’s replacement two RBI with a single. The hits continued in the fourth with Ryan Howard going yard for a two run homer, his eighteenth this year.
The bottom of the fourth saw the Marlins get on the scoreboard with a homer by John Buck, a two run shot off Cole Hamels.
In the sixth inning Ryan Howard singled in Jimmy Rollins for his third RBI of night.
The ninth was another multi run inning for the Phillies. They tacked on another six runs with a bases loaded triple by Michael Martinez, another RBI for Ryan Howard with his double and two more from a home run by Raul Ibanez. Ryan and Raul each homered and both had four RBI. When the smoke cleared the score was 14-2 and that was the final.
The Phillies win scoring fourteen runs on eighteen hits. Cole Hamels gets the win and is now 10-4. The Phillies are now 55-32, they will go for the three game sweep with Kyle Kendricks on the mound.
Chris Volstad (4-8) gets the loss he went four innings giving up seven runs on nine hits. Florida is 38-48.
