PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES @ CINCINNATI REDS

Philadelphia was looking for the sweep today, looking to hand the Reds their fourth loss in as many games against the Phillies.
Vance Worley got the start for Philadelphia and entered the game with a 9-1 record.

The offense jumped on Reds starter Mike Leake in the second inning with five hits and scored three runs. No long balls here, all the Phillies runs were on well placed singles. Later in the game it was long ball time as Ryan Howard went yard with his 30th home run of the season. Michael Martinez joined Howard and connected for his third of the year. The Phillies had twelve hits and scored six runs to defeat the Reds 6-4.

 

Vance Worley gets the win and is now 10-1 this season. The Phillies are 15-2 in Worley’s seventeen starts. Going one better, they are now 13-0 in his last thirteen starts. Worley is closing in on Steve Carlton’s record from 1972 when the Phillies won fifteen consecutive games with Carlton starting.

Vance pitched six innings today and allowed four runs on eight hits with one walk and seven K’s. Brad Lidge and Antonio Bastardo shut the Red’s down in the seventh and eighth and Ryan Madson took over in the ninth and collected his 26th save.
 

Mike Leake (11-9) is the losing pitcher for the Red’s. Joey Votto collected his 88th RBI of the season and Chris Heisey hit his 13th home run.

Philadelphia wins the four game series and for the record, the last time the Phillies beat the Reds in a four game series in Cincinnati was May 13-16 1916!
The Phillies are 87-46, thirteen games from the 100 mark. They are 4-0 in the  "Final 33" game run. Philadelphia heads to Florida now and will have Roy Oswalt on the mound for game one. Cincinnati is three games below .500 at 67-70.
