MONDAY QUICK HITS
ATLANTA BRAVES @ PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
A three game series between the Phillies and Braves and almost do or die time for Atlanta if they want to catch the Phillies. Going into the game today the Phillies had a 7.5 game lead on second place Atlanta. They play three this week and the final three games of the season for Philadelphia are against the Braves in Atlanta. Six games total and a chance for the Braves to put a huge dent in
the Phillies lead. The flip side of that and the one I like, the Phillies could increase their lead and put an end to the Braves hopes. Really like that much better.
Cliff Lee started for the Phillies and they scored a quick two runs for Lee in the first inning with a two run single from Hunter Pence. That is all Lee would need as he went the distance pitching a five hit complete game shutout. This was the sixth shutout of the season for Lee. The last pitcher to record six was Randy Johnson
in 1998. In his last start Lee came within one out of a shutout against Cincinnati. Cliff went the nine allowing no runs, no walks, five hits and six K’s. Lee is now 16-7 this season.
Just to be sure the Phillies went on after the first inning to score seven more runs for the 9-0 win. Hunter Pence was two for four with three RBI. Shane Victorino and Carlos Ruiz had two RBI each and Ryan Howard hit his 31st homer of the year. A complete great effort from the entire team.
Derek Lowe started for the Braves and gets the loss. They are now 82-58 and are 8.5 games behind the Phillies.
The Phillies take game one and are one win away from the ninety win mark at 89-48. In the "Final 33" they are 6-2, eleven games from the 100 win mark, 25 games left.
