Game 6
10/27/2011
Texas at St. Louis
Simply WOW!
With an extra day of rest due to game six being postponed, the Rangers and Cardinals went back to work with the Rangers leading the series 3-2 and needing just one more win to claim the 2011 World Series Championship.
Jamie Garcia started the game for the Cardinals and Colby Lewis was on the mound to start for the Rangers. With the exception of game three when the final was 16-7 with St. Louis on top all the other games were low scoring.
Hard to know what to expect in this game, cold weather etc. but it started with three runs being scored in the first.
Texas struck first with a single by Josh Hamilton to go up 1-0. In the bottom of the first the Cardinals got on the board with a two run shot from Lance Berkman and St. Louis took a 2-1 lead. Texas came back with a run in the second to tie the game with a ground rule double from Ian Kinsler scoring Craig Gentry.
The Rangers went ahead in the fourth 3-2, when Mike Napoli singled in Nelson Cruz. The Cardinals answered in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game and like a boxing match Texas came right back in the top of the fifth to take the lead again 4-3, off of a double from Michael Young.
Meanwhile on the mound, Colby Lewis was still pitching for Texas to start the sixth with a 4-3 lead. He left the sixth with one out and the bases loaded. Alexi Ogando relieved Lewis and walked the first batter to force in the tying run. With the bases loaded Texas catcher Mike Napoli picked off Holliday at third and there were two outs. Ogando walked the next batter to load the bases again and his night was over. Derek Holland was on the mound next and he put out the fire getting Jon Jay on grounder to the mound.
Texas was not going to allow the score to be tied long and in the top of the seventh Nelson Cruz and Adrian Beltre both homered to make the score 6-4. Ian Kinsler then hit a single to drive in a run and take Texas to a 7-4 lead.
Not low scoring tonight, no way. St. Louis came back in the bottom of the eighth scoring on a home run by Allen Craig putting the Cardinals within two at 7-5. With two out the Cardinals loaded the bases but failed to score and Texas was still on top 7-5.
Texas could not score in the ninth and St. Louis came to bat three outs from defeat and Texas winning the World Series. Not over yet no way, the Cardinals still had life and came back to tie the game on a triple from David Freese, scoring Albert Pujols and Lance Berkman score now 7-7.
Extra innings, score tied and Texas wasted no time getting back on top. Josh Hamilton nailed a two run shot and Texas was back on top 9-7.
It was up to St. Louis to repeat or better what they did in the ninth. The Cardinals scored one to make it 9-8, now two on, two outs, two strikes and BINGO Lance Berkman lines a single to score Jon Jay and we are tied at nine.
Top of the eleventh and Texas did not score. They needed to because in the bottom of the eleventh BANG! solo shot walk off home run David Freese, Cardinals win 10-9.
Winning pitcher for the Cardinals is Jake Westbrook losing pitcher Mark Lowe.
THERE IS A FINAL GAME SEVEN!
