Very soon, a speed tracking mobile laser gun will hit roads and highways of Anantapur district to track vehicles exceeding minimum speed limits. Experts from Hyderabad recently trained Road Transport Authority (RTA) personnel for operating the device in Anantapur district.
The speed tracking laser gun, also called a radar machine will be able to detect vehicles exceeding the prescribed speed limits depending on the nature of horsepower and tyre strength of the vehicle. The minimum speed limit for a two-wheeler is 50 km and for a heavy vehicle such as a lorry, it is 40 to 50 km, depending on tyre strength and horsepower.
State government introduced the laser gun first at Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam. Now, the RTA is reaching out to every district with the equipment to help reduce road accidents and punish those violating traffic rules.
The radar machine can track violations from a range of 10 to 15 km. The gun photographs vehicles and gives the vehicle number and details of the vehicle owner. RTA authorities also feel that for effective functioning, departmental staff strength should be beefed up and the existing vacancies of assistant motor vehicle inspectors (AMVI), who are the lifeline of the department should be filled besides sanctioning new posts.
