32-year old Sabita Manjhi was arrested for killing her own son- a boy of mere five years age- on 13th August’08 from her house at Jaichanditala village in Howrah district of West Bengal. The body of the boy was fished out of a nearby pond where she has thrown him after killing.
As per a police officer, after refusing to accept the killing for four hours she gave in under sustained interrogation and confessed killing the boy and throwing the body in the pond near her shanty.
According to her confession, on Wednesday the boy asked her mother for biscuits which she refused. When the boy continued pestering her, Sabita lost her cool and in a fit of rage started hitting him by a ‘bonti’(a vegetable cutter with a curved big sized knife blade used in Bengal house holds) repeatedly on his shoulder, back, face and head. The kid could not save himself from the onslaught of his furious mother and slumped to the floor in a pool of blood.
When Sabita realized that the boy had died, she threw his body in the pond. She then went around the neighborhood asking if any one has seen his son. Seeing her too upset some of the neighbor came to her house and found blood strains on the floor and walls.
One neighbor, Samir Porel said, “When we asked her about the blood stains, she said that Suman (name of the boy) has cut his fingers over a ‘bonti’ and ran away. But we did not believe her and informed the police.”
Sabita’s husband Tapan is a vegetable seller in the nearby town of Domjur. He said, “I returned home at 4.30pm and asked Sabita about Suman. She told me he has cut his fingers and fled away. I grew suspicious seeing blood all over the floor, but I never imagined that she may kill her son.”
The couple had two more sons and incidentally both have gone to visit their aunt residing at Bhandergachhi.
