Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve and Joggins Fossil Cliffs Named World Heritage Sites

The UNESCO world heritage committee has named eight new wonders of the world including the Joggins Fossil Cliffs in Canada and the Monarch Butterfly Biospher Reserve in Mexico.

Other sites include the Socotra Archipelago in Yemen, the French Lagoons of New Caledonia, Saryarka in Northern Kazakhstan, Mount Sanqingshan National Park in China,  Iceland’s Surtse and the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona.

The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Mexico is the overwintering place for an estimated 1 billion butterflies. The butterflies migrate 3,000-4,500 kilometers from various areas in the United States to the Reserve in Central Mexico.

The Joggins Fossil Cliffs in Nova Scotia, Canada contain the fossils of the first reptiles in Earth’s history. The area dates back 300 million years and provides scientists and archeologists with priceless knowledge about the evolution of dinosaurs, reptiles and birds.
