KATHMANDU, March 24, 2010: Breaking the ice, After 2 years, Ex-King Gynandra Bir Bikram Shah Dev finally confronted the media giving an exclusive interview to Avenues TV saying, “Monarchy has not ended in the country.” The 240 year old Monarchy system in Nepal was abolished by the Constitution Assembly (CA) which stood on grounds of the People’s Revolutionary Movement (Jana Andolan) against the king’s sack of the people’s nominated government. The CA reasoned the king’s move on February 1st 2005 of sacking and taking all executive powers into his own hands to be unconstitutional and was more power driven which resulted in the end of Monarchism in Nepal. Speaking at the interview, Ex-King Gynandra said, “The February 1st 2005, move was wrongly judged and was not time appropriate. But the intentions behind the move was more of a time’s demand where political instability and political manipulation degraded the management and the country was moving toward an unknown path of political chaos. I think people didn’t want an active Monarchy system but the move was time driven which should be properly evaluated. I certainly have learnt my lesson from that move where the norms and values need to be considered and understood.” “Looking back to history, it is evident that such ups and downs have been faced and more or less were part of the country’s running process, it depends upon the people’s choices and voices. Similarly, Monarchism being a part of people’s voices has always accepted the people’s demand and we as an institution stand for and by the people,” said the King. He asserted that, “My move for giving power was completely aspired for peace and stability, as during that time people’s political aspirations were very high and making people’s aspiration suffer was not a condition but a decision that was completely motivated to relieve them rather then to suppress them.” He further added, “Now the situations have changed, I had given up my powers for the sake of peace and stability. But looking at the current scenario it’s evident to consider that the country is going an opposite way where people are facing the consequences. Peace, security and stability are the basic needs which should not be compromised at any cost and further must be collaborated accordingly. This country was unified by our ancestors with the theme of unity and peace. The current on-going activities are certainly jeopardizing its existence which needs to be understood and mandated accordingly to the people’s aspirations.” Taking more about the country being declared as republican, the Ex-King said “Its people’s choice and we being a part of people completely are comfortable with it, but if people are not satisfied then the political leaders should give stance to their aspirations.”
