Southwest monsoon is expected to touch Kerala coast on June 2, says the Indian meteorological department. The meteorological department had earlier predicted that the monsoon would reach Kerala in the last week of May. Reports of rainfall from the coast of Kerala over the last couple of days were however dismissed as monsoon showers by the met department. The department considers these rains as consequence of pre-monsoon effect. The rainfall on Kerala coast was recorded as 0.5 cms.
“We are expecting rainfall by June 2 in Kerala. Now that the monsoon is delayed by a couple of days, we can expect rains in our state (Andhra Pradesh) by June 8,” says Mr V.L. Prasad Rao, director meteorological centre in Visakhapatnam. The met department forecasts normal rainfall in Andhra Predesh this year. The department also anticipates good rainfall in Telangana region compared to other parts of the state.
Generally, Telangana region receives more rain due to Southwest monsoon compared to other parts. So this region will see good rainfall between June and September. The south coastal Andhra is expected to see good rainfall due to Northeast monsoon. Hence, they will see good rains in mid October, said, Mr V.L. Prasad Rao. The temperature in the state is expected to be normal till the onset of monsoon. The department hinted that the heat waves would stay in the state for another week.
