Mexican heavyweight Manuel Uribe is spending part of his time these days giving advice to another man who’s hoping not to follow in Uribe’s footsteps.
He has a good start though. Uribe, at his heaviest, weighed 1,230 pounds; it is estimated that Jose Luis Garza weighs about 990 pounds. The two men, both bedridden, live in Monterrey, Mexico.
Garza, like Uribe before him, went public with his desire to lose weight, pleading for help on a Mexican television program. Uribe heard the pleas and gave him a call.
No doubt Uribe, 43, is giving Garza information he learned on the Zone diet that helped him shed about 550 pounds. A couple of years ago, Italian surgeons were going to perform gastric bypass surgery on Uribe, but he decided against it when he began losing weight on the diet. He uses a harness system to lift weights. "I am losing weight every day and I don’t feel that I’m so desperate that I need an operation,” he said at the time.
Uribe has help these days from his girlfriend Claudia Solis, whom he is marrying the end of October. Solis took Garza some fruit and protein supplements that Uribe is using to help him in his fight against the extreme obesity. He said he would also help him get a wheel-equipped iron bed similar to the one he has.
Before the excess weight caught up to Uribe, he worked as a chef in a bowling alley, eating by his admission, too much junk food and too many greasy tacos. Nine months ago, his parents died within 13 days of each other, and he reacted by binge eating. One of his sisters has helped care for him.
