Perhaps the growing problems let alone humanitarian problems in Sudan could become a major international challenge for current United States President Barack Obama. It has been about a month and a half since Obama had taken the oath of office as the forty-fourth President of the United States. The humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan is not getting any better.
So far, Sudan has been quite the interesting topic in 2008. It was a topic touched during the 2008 United States Elections and prelude to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague, Netherlands had recently issued an arrest warrant for Omar al-Bashir, the President of Sudan. This had brought forth severe repercussions. In retaliation, several international aid groups were kicked out of the country. It had also put a split between the African Union and the United Nations.
The UN warns that it will hurt humanitarian operations in Sudan.
On top of that, enforcing the warrant is easier said than done.
Today, more international aid groups are at risk of being kicked out of the country. Al-Bashir said that it does not concern them. He gave further warning that they better not interfere.
Perhaps more international pressure could lead towards China. While international aid groups are getting the boot, China had signed a contract with the government during a ceremony.
Overall, the ICC has a lot on its hands. Al-Bashir said interesting words to Luis Moreno Ocampo, the ICC prosecutor.
“Tell them all, the ICC prosecutor, the members of the court and every one who supports this court that they are under my shoe,” he said. In that respect, Al-Bashir is snubbing them off.
Due to the contract signed, this could possibly bring China back into the mix. However, China opposes the ICC. It opposes it for several reasons.
