Ocean Spray, Kashi and General Mills were the most recent of dozens of companies to voluntarily recall potentially salmonella-infected peanut products.
The company responsible for distributing the peanuts, Peanut Corporation of America, is currently under criminal investigation by the FDA. Despite the investigation, FDA rules required Peanut Corp’s approval before initiating a full scale recall.
More than 500 people have become ill, with at least 8 deaths, as a result of tainted products. Initially, the recall applied only to peanut based candies, but has since been expanded to include any product containing peanuts from Peanut Corp. The FDA suggests that consumers discard or discontinue use of any suspect products until more information is available.
Jars of name brand and most store brand peanut butters are still considered safe.
