A three year old girl was murdered by two brothers who were convicted of abusing and murdering the child by spinning the toddler in a tumble dryer. The child’s mother was found guilty of manslaughter for not protecting her child from this cruelty and abuse.
Nia Glassie died of brain injuries in hospital last August. Also, she was kicked in the head by Wiremu Curtis, 19 and his 22 year old brother Michael.
The mother of the child had shared a house with Wiremu, Michael and other people. None of them did anything while Nia’s cousins, Michael and Wiremu tortured her severely. They dropped her from their arms after picking her up, punched, kicked and flung her against the wall. They spun her in a hot-tumble dryer. Afterwards, the poor child was left unconscious for 36 hours without any medical attention. Both the family members and neighbours knew about this cruelty but didn’t do anything to stop the two brothers. The community was shocked and saddened by this tragic end to this little girl’s life.
Affected by Nia’s story, presiding Justice Potter cried in court, but thanked the jury for the verdicts.
