Governor, N N Vohra, today paid a visit to the Moughal Road Project site at Dubjan in the Shopian district and reviewed the progress on this vital 84 kilometer road, in which work is progressing simultaneously from Bafliaz (in Poonch) and Shopian (in the Valley).
The Governor was given a detailed briefing about the progress on the road project, which is likely to be commissioned in December 2010. So far, 34 kilometers of fair weather road has been completed from the Poonch side and 39 kilometers from the Shopian side. Work on the remaining 10.5 kilometers is progressing.
The Governor directed the concerned engineers to make the road jeepable before the ensuing Eid. Unfortunately, due to the recent disturbed situation in the two regions, of Jammu and Kashmir, the work on this important project has got delayed by 20 days.
Since July 2007, 49 culverts and one bridge have been constructed. Presently, work is progressing on five minor and one major bridge on this road. The double-lane road project has been taken up under the Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Plan in 2005 and is estimated to cost Rs 639.85 crores. As per the blueprint, the road from Bafliaz to Shopian will cross the 13,000 feet mountain range, which is higher than Banihal pass on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
At Daubjan, the Governor interacted with the locals, including a large number of Gujjar, who apprised him of their various problems.
Principal Secretary to Governor, Mr B B Vyas and Secretary, Public Works, Mr Shailendra Kumar accompanied the Governor on his inspection of this road.
