Mumbai is totally out of gear with hooligans wandering the streets and distrupting the normal activities of the city. Mumbai is burning and the police seems to be just watching. It all started when MNS chief Raj Thackeray was arrested in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. He was arrested at around 3.30 am from Ratnagiri. His supporters went on a rampage since then and the normal activities in Mumbai got a beating on Tuesday.
Raj Thackeray was arrested on account of an FIR lodged by two north-Indian students in the Kherwadi police station after they were beaten up and prohibited from appering for the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) exams. His party’s stand on non-Marathi persons getting employment in Maharashtra was evident here and there was constant pressure from the Central Government as well as the Congress leaders nationwide. The Maharashtra Government decided to arrest him and matters have worsened since then.
His supporters have thronged the streets of Mumbai on Tuesday morning and distrupted property. Many buses and taxis were stoned and reports of autorichshaws being torched have also been received. He is to appear in Bandra Court for his hearing where it will be decided whether he would be bailed or put under police arrest. Meanwhile, a large number of his supporters and also opposition members are waiting outside the court to hear the judgement, chanting slogans and supporting him. The judgement remains to be seen with his supporters in no mood to hear anything against their leader. One thing is for sure, though, that Mumbai continues to burn.
