The lone surviving accused of the 26/11 terror attacks on Mumbai was convicted on 3rd May, 2010 by special judge M L Tahalyani. Ajmal Amir Kasab, a Pakistani national, was held guilty on 86 charges from the 2008 Mumbai attacks including waging a terror war on India and murder.
Kasab was convicted based on the testimony of 653 witnesses and CCTV camera footage showing the Lashkar-e-Toiba operative with an AK-47 gun in Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. He was found guilty of directly killing 7 people and aiding in a total of 59 deaths along with his associate Abu Ismail who was shot dead on the night of terror attacks.
Two of the accused who were of indian nationality, Fahim Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed were aquitted by the court because of doubtful evidence. They were charged with aiding the killers by providing them with hand-drawn maps of the crime scenes. Special prosecuter Ujjwal Nikam has said he would recommend the government to appeal against the aqquital verdict in High Court.
Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram expressed satisfaction at the verdict and stated that this should be treated as a warning by Pakistan to refrain from exporting terror to India.
