Jannat Bi -the 74-year-old Muslim woman works at a Hindu crematorium in Goan city of Margao for the last forty-five years, proving that religion matter is not a barrier for making a living.
She provides a decent burial to unclaimed bodies, arranging the funeral pyre at the Hindu crematorium in Goa.
“Some people would give Rs 200, Rs 100 or Rs 50 and some did not give anything.’, she declared. Dharwad-born Bi’s main goal is to assure to her family all the things they need, despite the unusual job of working at a crematorium and that too a Hindu one.She said that she is glad to help the Hindu families in performing the last rites and the funeral pyre, comprised of wood, sandal wood, petrol, kerosene and ghee.
The Muslim woman, born and brought up in Dharwad district of Karanataka, receives Rs 1,000 per month by the owners of the crematorium and a monthly pension of Rs 1,000 under the social security scheme from the Goa government.
She still hopes to have a place of her own before she dies.
