The United Nations should heed the call of some developed countries to engage in international action against Myanmar for refusing to grant access to international relief missions to save its own people dying of hunger and exposed to health risks.
The emergency call came even after Russia and China have expressed opposition to the impending plan, saying this will violate Myanmar’s sovereignty as a nation. But there is a provision in the UN charter that should a country fails to protect its own people from danger, the UN has no choice but to act by any means possible.
And the hardheadedness of the military regime might be the fuse that will spark a political misunderstanding thereby allowing some countries to resort to force if only to save tens of thousands of Burmese cyclone victims from further dying witout food, shelter, clothings and medicines at their disposal. And the Myanmar government is not in anyway capable of providing the means to distribute relief assistance to the disaster victims. Instead, the military government has ordered the confiscation of the relief goods that are supposed to be for the cyclone victims. What for?
Did they seize the relief goods for their own use or for the military consumption? I doubt not. But that’s what the military government was for the relief workers to just dump the goods and leave so that the junta can have leverage to do what it pleases to do with the planeloads of relief assistance already in Myanmar. This is a manifestation that these stone-hearted generals are poker faced and shameless in character.
Where can you see a government whose leaders are the ones putting the people at risk, despite the deplorable conditions that they are sufferings right now? It’s only in Myanmar!
