Nargis – “Name of a Cyclone” – Costs Catastrophic Destruction

Burma which has a total area of 678,500 square kilometres (261,970 sq mi), and the 40th-largest in the world is the largest country by geographical area in mainland of SouthAsia.

Burma has a 1,930 km (1,199 mi) of contiguous coastline along the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea to the southwest and the south, which forms one-third of its total perimeter.

On 3rd May, Burma, also known as Myanmar, suffered devasting losses from Cyclone Nargis which struck early Satuday, May 3, 2008.

Initial reports, just two days after the storm struck have estimated 22,000 perished and 44,000 missing and leaving over a million people homeless.

The storm surge swept the entire region with a 12-foot high wall of water.

In Srilanka, the cyclone produced heavy rainfall, which led to flooding and landslides across ten districts in the country. The districts of Ratnapura and Kegalle were the most affected, where more than 3,000 families were displaced.

Thousands of houses were flooded, with 21 reported destroyed. The rainfall left 4,500 people homeless, and more than 35,000 people were affected on the island.

Three people were reported injured on the island, with two others dead.
