NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration was established 50 years ago today, July 29, 1958.
The Administration was born in response to the Russians’ successful launch of the first man-made satellite, Sputnik, in 1957. NASA was a replacement for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) which was established in 1915.
To celebrate their 50th birthday, NASA has introduced a website that lets the public view all of the 21 major NASA image galleries at one website, www.nasaimages.org. The collection will have photographs, animations, historic films and videos that make up a visual timeline of NASA’s first 50 years.
Since it was established 50 years ago, NASA has explored our solar system, sending men to the moon and space crafts to Mars, Jupiter and the depths of outer space.
