My friend Nate Westheimer was elected this evening to be the next organizer of the NY Tech Meetup, the largest association of internet entrepreneurs and investors in the New York area.
Grabbing 303 votes– 48% of the 630 total votes cast— Westheimer’s win was confirmed by Assistant Organizer and Meetup.com employee Dawn Barber shortly after the contest closed at midnight EST. In an email to the group’s 7,530 members, Barber said ‘Huge CONGRATULATIONS to Nate!"
Immediately after hearing the news, Westheimer posted a status update on short-form blogging platform Twitter, saying, "Wow. Humbled and ready to serve. Love to all."
I publicly endorsed Nate Westheimer for the role, won over by his platform for better coordination over blind, irrational changes to a very successful organization. He previously founded BricaBox and is currently Entrepreneur in Residence at Rose Tech Ventures.
The role is unpaid but influential; tech industry blog Silicon Alley Insider said of the election that "the winner will instantly become one of the most prominent figures in Silicon Alley."
Former organizer Scott Heiferman, who is also CEO of Meetup.com, a platform that allows people to create a group about ‘anything, anywhere,’ announced he would step down from NYTM in November.
Heiferman’s decision may have been influenced by allegations of cronyism and unfairness from blogger Alan Stern and others.
