Gool (Jammu), April 18 – Ridiculing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his claim to strengthen the “third generation friendship between Gandhi-Abdullah families”, president of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti today said that such opportunist alliances were always proved short lived and bigger political disaster for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing a mammoth public meeting at Gool in support of party candidate Thakur Balbir Singh, the PDP president said that that the fate of the present opportunist alliance no way would be different from the previous accords between two parties. “A number of times National Conference leadership has forged such un-programmatic alliances with the Congress for the lust power and then floundered the same with one or other reasons and entered into confrontation with the same party”, she said while reminded the people about of 1952 Nehru-Sheikh accord, known as Delhi Agreement. She added that that with in a year after the accord Sheikh Abdullah was put behind the bar despite being the fact that he had eroded the authority and power of the state while signing that agreement for the lust of power.
Cautioning people against deceiving tactics of National Conference, she said that leadership of this 100years old party has always bartered wishes and aspirations of the people of the State to remain in power. “What happened to the Indira-Sheikh accord of 1975 when Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah had meekly surrendered before the
Chiding former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah for assuring the people to take up the issue of greater autonomy in the Parliament, Mehbooba Mufti said that it was National Conference leadership that has brazenly eroded special status and autonomy of the State for the lust of power. “How a weak and helpless National Conference leadership can take up the issue of greater autonomy in the Parliament ?”, she asked, adding, “even in 1999 when NC had 60 MLAs and five MPs including a Minister in the Union Minister in its kitty, the party failed to take a stand of this issue”. “The then NDA Government in which NC was also a part had thrown the autonomy resolution the dustbin but despite humiliation, the party (NC) remained in the coalition just to enjoy the power” she said and cautioned the people that NC leaders were again raising the bogey of autonomy to befool the common masses.
“For the lust of power NC leadership can go to any extent”, she said and added that whenever NC has forged alliance it proved disastrous for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “It is known fact that 1986 Farooq-Rajiv Accord was the biggest historical blunder in the history of Jammu and Kashmir”, she said and reminded how the infamous 1987 assembly elections were brazenly rigged by the same coalition to remain in power. “Had NC-Congress not rigged the elections in 1987, situation would have been entirely different in
Calling upon the people to compare three year tenure of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed with decades long mis-goverance of successive governments, she said that unlike other political parties PDP never compromised with wishes and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “We had just 16 MLAs in our kitty but our leadership forged alliance with Congress only after the agenda of PDP was incorporated in the Common Minimum Programme (CMP)”, she recalled and reminded that before formation of the coalition in 2002 Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who was then leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, had endorsed the stand taken by the PDP. Through our conviction and vision, the PDP convinced the then NDA regime headed by Atal Behari Vajpayee to extend hands of friendship towards
