The government of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo had revived the proposed national ID system in the country. It was in 1992 when a senator brought the idea to the attention of his colleagues in the senate. His proposal is for the people to have fast and practical transactions with the government and the private institutions using the ID system. Since then, varied reactions were heard from the people. Political leaders as well as government officials are divided on the issue.
But under the leadership of the current administration, the officials argued that the implementation of national ID system is an urgent necessity of the present time. According to them, the national ID system would put an end to the long insurgency problem in the country. Criminality and other illegal activities will probably sink to the bottom or totally diminished.
Every citizen will be required to have an identification card to make it easier for the authorities to check on the status of every individual. A complete detail of a person’s identity will immediately be known if the national ID system exists.
Good as it may sound, majority of the people are actually not in consensus to the idea of national ID system. Their arguments fell on the insincerity of the present administration concerning political killings and human rights violations. It was noted that cases of human rights violations under the administration of Mrs. Arroyo has significantly worsen, according to the UN rights commission that conducted a study last year.
