The youth homelessness group National Network for Youth (NN4Y) has decided to break its ties with Virgin Mobile’s clothing drive Strip2Clothe.
Virgin Mobil, a cell phone company, started the campaign as a clothing drive for underprivileged children, but the details of the campaign are what made the National Network for Youth and its 150 member organizations opt out.
The Strip2Clothe campaign invites users to submit videos of themselves performing a strip show. The more hits a video receives on their websites, the more clothing companies donate to the drive. As you can imagine, a youth group like National Network for Youth does not support this racy campaign.
One member group attacked the NN4Y’s efforts to sexually exploit homeless youth in the following statement: "The campaign … exploits sex to help a population that is frequently exploited by sex to meet their basic needs of food and shelter."
Virgin Mobil is still running the Strip2Clothe campaign for anyone interested.
