PML (N) Chief and former Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday reiterated his demand for formation of a government of national consensus minus President Musharraf and a new election commission headed by Justice (retd) Rana Bagwandas.
Addressing a news conference at his residence in Model Town here he said, "A neutral government of national consensus be formed in consultation with political parties to hold elections."
He said the existing caretaker government was not neutral against which reservations had been expressed by almost all political parties including PPP and it could not be expected to hold elections in free and transparent manner.
Suggesting the name of Justice (retd) Rana Bagwandas as new chief election commissioner, he said an election schedule should also be announced afresh and all political parties should participate in the elections under a neutral caretaker government and independent election commission.
To a question about possible delay of polls if his proposals were to be accepted he said, "It does not matter much even if elections are delayed by two or three weeks, as formation of national government minus President Pervez Musharraf and an independent election commission would help bring about immediate resolution of almost 95 percent of the problems being faced by the country."
"Though we would fully participate in elections even if our demand for a national consensus government is not met, yet these elections would not help overcome the problems," he said.
About the steps taken by the government for his security he said, " I am not satisfied with the security provided to me."
"The government claims to have provided me a bullet proof vehicle, but I have not received it as yet."
He rejected President Musharraf’s assertion that his policies had been very successful and the next government would continue the same.
The PML-N leader said the present uncertain situation in the country was in fact the result of ill-conceived policies of the rulers and people wanted real democracy and not continuation of undemocratic rule.
