Nepal Confirms Two More Cases of Swine Flu

Three days after confirming the first case of swine flu in the country, officials of Nepal on Thursday confirmed two more cases of the deadly disease.

The Ministry of Health and Population officials confirmed that a 17-month-old baby and a five-year-old child had contracted the flu. According to ministry officials, the baby belongs to the same couple who was confirmed as the first case of swine flu in the country.

Earlier, three persons, a couple and their eight-year-old son, had tested positive for the flu. The couple, who returned the country from the US via Doha on June 21, has been kept under the supervision of Epidemiology and Disease Control Department (EDCD) under the Ministry of Health Population.

According to the EDCD, the infected persons are undergoing treatment under strict surveillance.

Meanwhile, the EDCD officials said that they have 34,000 dosage of Tamiflu to combat the spread of the disease in this Himalayan nation. The officials, however, added that order have been placed to bring additional Tamiflu tablets in the country.

After confirming the cases of swine flu in the country, the government has intensified screening of people at different points along the borders with China and India. It has also kickstarted awareness campaigns — radio jingles, TV commercials and print advertisements along with brochures — to inform people about the disease.
