Nepal King to leave the Narayanhiti Palace before the deadline set by the Constitutional Assembly

It may be recalled that the Nepal Constitutional Assembly abolished the 240 year old monarchy, declaring Nepal a Republic.It also set a deadline of 15 days for the King Gyanendra to vacate the Narayanhiti palace.

The former King Gyanendra, on Monday said that he has accepted the decision of the Constituent Assembly (CA)to abolish the monarchy. He said this in his first meeting with high level government officials after the CA declared Nepal a republic on May, 28.

Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula, who met the former king on Monday, said: ‘He(Gyanendra) said he has accepted the CA’s decision without any inhibition and expressed sadness that some sections of the media were trying to spread rumours that he would challenge the verdict.’

Gyanendra has assured the government that his family would move out of the palace once he find a suitable residence, said Mr.Sitaula, adding: ‘But that will be withing the deadline set by the CA’

The CA had directed Gyanendra and his family to vacate the NarayanhitiPalace by June 12. Gyanendra refuted reports that he had burnt the documents of the palace.
