As the Bihar government of India has blocked the water in the Gandak Canal, the production of electricity at the Gandak Hydel Powerhouse located at Guthi Suryapura in Nepal’s Nawalparasi district has been completely stopped.
According to reports, thousands of people in the district have been forced to live in darkness for about six weeks.
According to the 1959 Gandak Treaty between Nepal and India, India had to provide Nepal 18,000 cusec of water for Nepal’s use.
The Gandak Powerhouse used to generate 10 to 15 megawatt of electricity every day.
Reports quote Gandak Powerhouse Chief Durga Bahadur Gurung as saying that work in various sectors has been severely affected due to the lack of electricity.
