The air strikes by the Turkish military lasted over three hours and caused material damage according to Jabbar Yawer, spokesman for the Iraqi Kurdish security forces. In the previous week, Turkey launched two more air strikes into Northern Iraq along with a small ground incursion.
The PKK is blamed for launching attacks on Turkey from Iraq. The Turkish military did not give any immediate confirmation on the air strikes. Recently, the government had approved cross-border raids on the PKK in October. Turkey was told to restrain itself by the US and Iraq. In response, Turkey said that both countries did not do enough.
The Kurdistan Workers Party is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States, European Union, and Turkey. It’s believed that the PKK has a 3,000 strong force based in Northern Iraq.
