New Apps To Cut Down On Distracted Driving

Along with complaints of driving with smartphones, there are also new apps in the industry that are preventing distracted driving by cutting down this practice.

Sprint will be one of those firms providing an option of shutting down a driver’s device. One of these will be built by blackberry app developers. What the app is designed to do is automatically disable phones when a car is moving at more than 10 miles/hour; this information is determined using the GPS. In addition, the app communicates to incoming calls or text messages that the owner of the phone is behind the wheel, reports nytimes.com.

Although Sprint is offering the app for its blackberry users and touts it as something essential for parents to give teenage kids, the phone company is also hoping it will lead to a much broader outcome in the U.S.

Nonetheless, the app does not come free of charge. It will cost $2 per month for each phone; it can also be placed on override with the push of tow buttons.

Sprint spokesman, Walter Fowler, said in a comment that you can’t force teens not to turn off such apps off; however, there are some reasons why users might want to override it. This ensures that account holders and parents are able to keep to a tab, since they would want to be notified when the service is overridden.
