When that liberal stesman Edmund Burke described the role of the press as " power without responsibility– theprivilege of the harlot down the ages" he did not envisage the possibility of groups and lobbies and political parties with a single agenda of clinging to power. Such a possibility has become thecrudereality now. Policies donot matter, personal agenda does. even parties donot matter. Family interests do.And there is no apology given or demanded. Perhpas thebest candidate was from thedynastyand the state and thenation woould and should welcome this sacrifice for the public cause!
Such an arrangement and its acceptance was the privilege of the aristocrat(read Nehru family). No longer. All allliances are subject to family diktat. And the shamefacedness of theexercise is seen to be believed.
The other aspect is the cringing attitude when challenged and theendless explanation for backtrackng , breaking promises etc. All inall, these politicians treat the country or their chosen territory as their godgiven right. one does lknow that we have journeyed far from the divine origin of kings. As irony would have it their place is now usurped by the mdern maharajas whose valour is restricted to machinations inside the drawing room or the resort.Looking at the lavish spread and style , one is reminded of thequip of Buchanan, the founder of the moral rearmament movement decades back. He was alwaystravelliong instyle and staying in thebest of hotels. And preaching God and moral values. Somebody asked him to justify this extravagance. Is God not a millionaire was the rejoinder. Are n’t we all millionaires many times over to support these netas in style?
