New lease of life for infant from Orissa

Bangalore: Eleven-month-old Pinky from Orissa underwent double switch heart surgery at the Wockhardt Hospitals. Pinky was operated for congenitally corrected transposition of great arteries, a condition which occurs in less than 1% of children born with heart defects. The paediatric cardiac team led by Dr.N S Devananda, completed the six hour surgery on the baby without any complications.Pinky had breathing difficulty in her second month. Doctors in Orissa referred her to Bangalore for consultation. The diagnosis revealed she was born with ventricular septral defect and straddling tricuspid valve. The baby had a large hole between the ventricles and encroachment on one of the valves across the hole. Children born with this kind of defect are susceptible to a complete heart block.
