A CNN News/Opinion Research Corp. poll conducted back in the end of April revealed that the state of the United States economy looks grim. Within the last few months, there were talks from President George W. Bush and his administration about stimulating the economy. He said that there would be stimulus checks coming in the mail between May and July at the earliest. Bush said that those checks should help stimulate the economy.
However, the poll says that the majority of Americans do not think or feel the same way. Back in February, 70% of Americans felt that those stimulus checks will do nothing for the economy. Now as it is in the early days of May, the percentage has increased to 82%.
In recent polls, the state of the economy was at the top of the minds for most Americans. Iraq has come in at a very distant second. So far, one poll by CNN showed that Democratic frontrunners Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and Senator Hillary Clinton of New York edged over presumed GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona on the economy.
McCain edges over Obama and Clinton on Iraq.
Under this stimulus plan, at least 130 million Americans will be entitled to tax rebates. If you’re single and earn under $75,000, you can get up to $600. If you’re married and earn under $150,000, you can get up to $1,200. So far, 30 million payments have been sent out so far.
Over 1,000 people took the poll. So far, they are clashing with the White House. According to the White House, it is impossible that the United States economy won’t be boosted.
Henry Paulson, the US Secretary of the Treasury explains that the gas prices will override the aims of the stimulus package. So far, gas prices have been blamed on the increase cost of food.
Ultimately, it will depend on how the individuals will use that money. There will be those that use it for gas and food, those that will go on vacation, those that will use it to down their credit card debt, etc.
Only time will tell on what will happen.
