The Pan-African University, PAU. has been granted permission to establish a school of media and communication, SMC, by the National University Commission, Nut. The new institution, which is the second to be established by the university, will assist practtioners in media and communication to develop their technical, conceptual and entrepreneurial skills, and thus become more professional in their activities. The school, which kicks off in october 2008, will run a master of Science degree in Media and Communication, and is expected to become a leading school in Nigeria, and Africa in general, in research, academics and training for professionals in the industry.
The programme, designed in response to the need of the industry combines academic and professional training to create an array of opportunities for students upon graduation. The school will also continue to run a range of professional courses for practitioners in the industry. Oluwaseye Ajayi, a senior offical of the school explains that the enriched curriculum for the master’s degree will provide students with rare opportunities for students to acquire skills that cut across the media industry generally, rather than the vertical nature of learning prevailing now.” With this, the graduates would be positioned to excel in any part of the media industry as professionals, entrepreneurs or academics. This undoubtedly is a major contribution to the drive of the country towards equitable and sustainable economic growth,” Ajayi said.
Meanwhile, the new school has concluded arrangements to commence acedemic activities as it has put in place world-class facilities at its Victoria Island Campus, especially language studios, computer laboratory, editing rooms, among others. These are in addition to existing facilities in the university prior to t5he establishment of SMC.
