New Years Eve Fizzle

New Years Eve is the most over-rated event on the calendar. Drinking, mates and fireworks seem to add hype to the night of the year. It does, and there is too much planning and involvement towards it and when the night finally comes, it is expected to go smoothly. Perfect is the word, really, but thinking about what we are all celebrating, a new year, it really is a bit silly.

There is the new years resolution where we add a goal for the upcoming year to fulfill. What ever stopped us from setting a goal in the first place? Why do we need to wait for the end of one year and the beginning of another to do that?

I like to reflect the year as it passed and the thing I enjoy best is that today I am a different person to who I was a year ago, and I am proud of that. It is nice to see a change in myself, with a new attitude to life, as well as new values.

New Years is also cliched, and I find cliches to be influential, in bad ways. Why is it that when the clock strikes midnight we are supposed to lock lips with the one we are to spend the next year together in when in many cases, we break up? I think this should only happen when we know we are with the one we are supposed to be with for life.

Now I am sounding cliched, but it is only those ‘hooker-uppers’ that disturb me, knowing they just want something physical and nothing emotional. And the alcohol has some influence there, I am sure. But I do believe many people have too high expectations of New Years.

I talked to some friends after last New Years Eve to see how theirs were. One complained they got capsicum sprayed by police at a beach gig and another does not remember because they drank too much. This year, I shall spend it at a friends house for a quiet night in with my closest buddies. Unlike last year, where I hit the city, and someone set off a stink bomb in the middle of the dance floor.
