For many years, I worked at the 92nd St. Y, in Manhattan. One night Newt Gingrich came to speak in their capacious auditorium. "I must protest this fiend!" I realized, so after long thought, I created the following placard:
NEWT G(ETT)INGRICH
I was delighted with my own cleverness, but later saw the same sign in Time magazine. As usual, I was not the first person to invent a witticism. (But I did recently devise this fake quotation from Morris Louis, the Color Field painter, which has never been said before — according to Google:
Quotation
"Life is easy once you stop trying to be happy."
– Morris Louis)
