The federal government has been called upon to provide adequate funds and reform facilities to the paramilitary and security operatives nationwide, Governor Ibrahim Shekarau of kano state made the appeal while receiving the state prison comptroller, Alhaji Muhammed Habib Iliyasu who paid him a courtesy visit in his office, said the state of most Nigerians prisons needs urgent attention.
Recalling his visit to the state central prison, the Shekarau said if proper reform facilities are not install for the rehabilitations of the prisons, the reason for keeping the inmate in prisons will be defeated, as they may come out worse than when they were imprisoned and reiterated his administrations determination to assists all paramilitary and security agencies in the states administration will support the prison service through the provision of basic needs for the inmates.
His words “Government cannot address all the needs of the people in the state due to the limited resources available to the state government; we can only assist from the small we get from the federal government”.
Earlier, the Kano prison comptroller, Alhaji Illiyasu inform the governor that the state prisons have a total of 2840 inmates, out of which 70 percent of the inmates are awaiting trials while 30 percent have been convicted for various jail terms and further disclosed that 40 inmates who have undertaken vocational training for various skills had sat and passed trade test examinations while 60 percent are still undergoing the vocational skill acquisition training within the prisons.
He the disclosed that the state prison served have also rented some place across the state for inmates who have completed their jail terms to help them setup their different trades.
Commending the state government for assisting the prison service in the state, he then called on the state government to provide scholarship to inmates who wish to further their education after serving their jail terms.
