Since 2005, nine woman have gone missing from the town of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and speculation of a serial-killer has taken hold in the small community located 60 miles northeast of Raleigh. Although law enforcement will not confirm the rumor, state and local police created a task force to examine the matter in June after the body of Jarneice Hargrove age 31 was discovered, and the FBI began to participate in July.
The remains of six women have been found near roads in the outlying regions of town, and all have been ruled homicides, with the cause of death only known in one case – by strangulation. Three local women remain missing, and all of the women involved are believed to have participated in drug use or prostitution.
Authorities are experiencing difficulties in assessing leads, as the killer leaves behind no hard evidence on or near the victims.
