Nishnabotna River Headed Out of Banks

It is now Wednesday April 25th, 2007and the rivers have just started to come over the banks in the city of Red Oak, Iowa.  Highway 34 could become a messy situation this evening into tonight because the Nishnabotna River could cover the road.  I went out to take a look at the river as it has been rising overnight into this morning and I found the first leak out of it’s banks right outside of Red Oak.  The radio has been giving reports that the river should crest by the middle of the night, then begin to recede.  Until then it is going to be messy.

While I was out observing the water’s rising I seen rise almost a foot and a half in the two hours I was out.  The flood stage level for the Nishnabotna is 18 feet and it was, at last report, 17.7 feet.  It should finally stop rising at about 21 feet which is 3 feet over the flood stage level.  Most of the major Highways and Interstates shouldn’t be effected in Southwest Iowa but some of the towns and crops could be effected greatly.  So until next time good luck and watch out for the rising waters.
