FDA suggests people should take 4 grams as the maximum daily dose of Tylenol, Johnson & Johnson’s 50-year-old painkiller, to prevent liver injury.
Outside advisors to FDA backed the suggestion in a 21-16 vote today in Adelphi, Maryland.
Specifically, single adults should lower the current 1,000 milligrams, or two extra-strength tablets, to the suggested 650 milligrams,or two regular strength tablets, and leave the extra-strength to prescription.
In fact, not only Tylenol, but also all over the counter drugs containing acetaminophen, a common ingredient in ache treatment, which has been a leading cause for liver injury for over 10 years, said FDA.
