It is difficult to quantify nor appreciate the efforts and sacrifices of a concerned man, when he is still alive. All the critics see are his mistakes and not the good things that he did for his country.
The likes of the late Dr. Jose Rizal and Senator Benigno Aquino, who sacrificed themselves to be killed, if only to free the people from the cruelties of the dictators. These were brave men whose principles could not be bought by money. Yet they were not afraid to gamble their lives, unlike the others who are coward enough to hide under the cloak of their powers.
Since their demise many years ago, nobody in his right mind followed their footsteps. There is a group of military officers who tried to make a change in the society. Trillanes joined the election fray by running as one of the opposition senators and won after he garnered some 11 million votes that put him in the number 11 spot, among the 12 senators elected for the seat.
This article does not want to call people to emulate what Senator Antonio Trillanes did when he led again a group of Magdalo soldiers to take over the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati City, Philippines. This commentary stems from what many people are talking about concerning the pitfalls that the Magdalo group ventured into thus putting them into a quagmire where nobody is sure as to whether they will get away from their actions.
Worse is critics are talking that what the Magdalo group did was a waste of time and money. Others are saying, too, that Trillanes wasted the confidence of the 11 million people who voted for him as senator. They could be right in their assumptions at this time, but roasting them with negative comments is not proper. After all, if we try to analyze the situation now in the country, has anybody made the right move to exemplify what Rizal and Aquino did? Trillanes may not be comparable to these heroes but at least he had initiated a move, rather than sit back and cool themselves at their airconditioned offices.
Nowadays, only a few people have the balls to gamble on serious matters, especially if it concerns about their safety and that of their families. Others aren’t just too concerned because all they think is the future of their families, which is right. But ventilating our shortcomings at the expense of other people isn’t acceptable, too. Let’s be fair and be honest to ourselves, once and for all.
