There are no rules and regulations regarding entrance of private car in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. Any body who has money can purchase a car and start riding taking just a license. As a result Every day there are new cars entering in the city street making huge jam and increasing sufferings for the mass people to reach the office/factory at just time and also to return home peacefully after finishing the task and duties. And everyday citizens of Dhaka are loosing 3-4 hours of our valuable time causing thousands of corers of taka every year.
According to urban planners, there should have at least 25% area for roads in a city, and there is only 6-7% area for roads in Dhaka city. And authority have limited initiative to expand capacity of road of a city for a population of 15 to 18 million. But every year more than 10 thousand new cars entering in the city street. Now transportation is a big punishment for innocent employees, workers and petty traders because of huge jam.
Along the 220 km road space covering 340 sq km city area from Narayanganj to Savar, the volume of buses, trucks, cars and three wheelers is growing at a breathtaking pace. With the axiom that the tonnage on city road, especially an industrial city grows twice as fast as the economy, the traffic growth has ranged at least 10 percent in each of the past 10 years. The total number of vehicles on the city road is about 7.5 lakh, at least five times the number it was in 1990. The weight of freight moved by the city roads in recent times has jumped to at least 50 times in this period and the number of passengers has leapfrogged to 70 times.
Government is providing 3000 crore taka as subsidy for petrol/fuel supply and the private car owners are taking advantage of it. They are also using important CNG; which could be used for industrial purpose and public transport. In the other hand, previous governments of Bangladesh exempted tax to import luxury cars. So any body who has money can purchase a car easy and cheaply. These private car owners are contributing noise and pollution to urban life.
The environmentalist said, Using natural gas and fuel for private car is a crime as it increases global warming. In their view there is a relation between ownership of private car and corruption.
Some of environmentalist and expert of transport start campaign for sustainable transportation System. They demand for stopping subsidized fuel and gas to private car owners. They think that, There should have at least one lace taka environment tax on a private car and gradually making Dhaka city free of private car.. There should have government policy about the car of organization/institution and should be under the environment tax net. They also demand to introducing more double decker bus at every route, separate track for bi-cycle in every road and encourage riding bi-cycle for all students of school, college and university. Government should establish quality cycle industry in Bangladesh and discourage importing bi-cycle
