In the midst of growing concerns about the harmful effects of using the mobile phones considered as a necessary evil even by its worst critics, this news may send a ring of relief into the users ears.
According to Mr.Eugene Flamm, an of Neuro-surgery at Montefiore Medical Center that cellphones cause brain tumors defies ‘credibility’. Besides, other experts including American Cancer Society have dismissed this theory. Their logic is based on three large epidemiology studies conducted since 2000 which have dismissed this notion and have come to the conclusion that wireless phones do not pose a health hazard.
But behold;there is a word of caution. The Food and Drug Administration has come out with a rejoinder in interpreting these results. The research findings at present is confined to an average use of the phones for a period of three years and hence do not answer questions about long-term exposures. These studies may be flawed for this reason in the sense that they do not distinguish between ‘casual’ and ‘heavy use’.
It is in this context and also the recent diagnosis of Edward Kennedy’s cancerous condition known as ‘glioma’ which is associated with cell phone use by its critics, a debate about the linkage between ‘cellphones and cancer’ has been reignited and a show case of this was the last week’s debate in the CNN where three prominent Neuro-surgeons took part in an interview with Larry King. All the three, viz, Doctors Keith Black, Vinit Khurana and Sanjay Gupta seem to believe in the linkage as they do not keep the cellphones next to their ears in order to keep the microwave antenna away from their brains.
It may be worth following their advice as a precautionary measure.
